Charter School Startup Petition Process and Timeline
Charter School petitions shall be submitted to the school Superintendent and School Board Chairman.
Petitions for charter schools shall be submitted by October 1 of the year preceding the charter school’s proposed opening (Ex. A charter seeking to open in August 2026 must submit a petition by October 1, 2025).
The Atkinson County School District will review submitted charter petitions and approve or deny petitions by official BOE vote by February 1 each year.
There shall be a 6 month period between board approval of the charter petition and when the charter school opens and begins serving students.
If the petition is denied, then within 20 days a detailed statement of denial will be provided to the petitioner, the SBOE, and the OCSC (Office of Charter School Compliance), with the elements set forth in state statute.
If the petition is approved, a copy must be submitted to OCSC and notice of approval will be sent to the petitioner within 30 days.
